Join the Breakaway family
At Breakaway Youth we need kind people who see value in the small things, who will make a meaningful effort to connect with the shy ones at the back. We need volunteers who can be compassionate and understanding, who listen and who learn. It doesn’t matter what kind of outdoor skills you have, that can be taught. What we care about is who you are, not what you can do. Furthermore, we need passionate people who have a fundamental desire to care and uplift young people through encouragement and compassion. Check out detailed descriptions of specific roles below. If you’re not sure if you suit one or if you suit many, select “other” in your application and we’d love to chat!
Why volunteer?
Volunteer roles
Camp Leaders
Commitment: 1 overnight camp per month with a specific group.
We need volunteers who are interested and have a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people; volunteers who are willing to come alongside campers to encourage, support and help them on their life journey. You do not need to have a skill set in outdoor activities, just simply be willing to learn and get involved.
If you aren’t able to commit to one weekend every month, we also have an option to be a “fill in” leader with a commitment of coming on 3 camps a year.
There are also have a few special programs throughout the year in which we need volunteers to come along as cooks.
Maintenance & Site Development
Commitment: From 1 or more weekends over a year.
We run several Working Bee weekends up at our Glendale camp property throughout the year. We are always looking for people willing to come up for the day or weekend to help with on-going projects and manual work around the property.
If you’d like to help out on our next Working Bee, or want to know more about helping with site maintenance or development, please fill in the volunteer application or alternatively sign up to our Working Bee Mailing List for updates on upcoming Working Bee activities!
Office Support
Commitment: Weekdays – but flexible around volunteer availability.
We are looking for people who are interested in helping out at Breakaway in ways other than attending programs. There is always work to be done at our office in Preston, both administrative and manual work maintaining facilities. Additionally we also look for helpers for different family and fundraising events throughout the year.
Skill-Specific Volunteers
If you have a skill set (i.e. sport, outdoor activities, trades, adventure programs, etc) that you’d like to use as a volunteer with Breakaway Youth, we’d be interested in hearing from you.
Fill in the Volunteer Application form below and select “Skill Specific” in the “about you” section.
